a land-based research project
GRIND//GROUND began as place, body, rock and pigment rooted research funded by the Arts Council Wales’ Creative Steps Grant 2024. Working with Dr Morgan Jones, a Glacial Geologist from Aberystwyth University’s Earth Sciences Department, performance artist Vivian Ross-Smith, and on solo research field trips to the Preseli Hills and the Pembrokeshire Coast. The earth pigments gathered were translated into performance and print-making materials, working with 2D and 3D image-making, exploring place, body and rock dialogues.

Unconformable - Loss of time in the layers - washing away between layers. Merging. Could be a loss of one event (storm eg.) or millions of years.
Geological diagrams - Alluvial Fans from Bristol Channel Fault Zone.
Water entering rock when stretched and split by great geological movements. High silica content creating crystalising in rock.
